What to Expect From A Chiropractor Appointment
Chiropractors are known for focusing on spinal manipulation to ease pain or other health concerns. It can be intimidating to schedule an appointment with a chiropractor without having been to one. However, there is nothing to worry about. A chiropractic appointment is like a visit to a general practitioner, except the prescribed treatment will involve spinal manipulation.
As with visiting any doctor, it will be important to describe the symptoms and reasons for the appointment. The chiropractor will take this information, combined with an X-ray and a physical exam, and decide on a course of treatment. If there is any discomfort during the appointment, it is important to let the doctor know. They are there to help and will take this information into consideration for the treatment plan.
At the chiropractor, patients are likely to undergo some form of physical therapy, in order to relax the muscles to acclimate to the re-alignment. This may include massage or electrical stimulation. If a patient has not undergone this treatment before, the chiropractor’s assistant or therapist will be there to assist and answer questions.
It’s common to visit the chiropractor more frequently earlier in a new course of treatment. The benefit of spinal manipulation is that the spine and joints are re-aligned afterward. However, that effect can wear off more quickly towards the beginning of treatment. Visits can range from two or three times a week when treatment begins, so it is best to prepare for frequent appointments. As treatment proves successful, visits may decrease to once per week or twice per month.
Not all chiropractors are the same. While some prefer physical spinal manipulation, others prefer to practice with a neurological approach or through nerve manipulation. It is up to the patient to do their research and decide what treatment makes them feel their best.
